Who We Are

Animal Equality is an international animal protection organisation working with society, governments, and companies to end cruelty to farmed animals. Animal Equality has offices in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, and India.

Animal Equality runs high-impact campaigns to end animal cruelty. The organisation releases investigative materials captured inside factory farms and slaughterhouses, exposing the conditions farmed animals face around the world.

Through strategic campaigns, corporate engagement, public advocacy, and investigative work, Animal Equality seeks to create lasting change for animals used in food systems.

About the Role

The European Campaigns Communications Manager will lead the communications strategy behind Animal Equality’s European campaigns during a critical policy window, as well as selected corporate campaigns that support our broader mission and strategic goals.

The position is integrated within Animal Equality’s international campaigns team and works under the direction of the Campaigns Manager and Vice President for Europe, collaborating closely with policy, campaigns, and communications teams across the organisation.

This role is central to political advocacy, media relations, content creation, and campaign strategy. You will be the voice and architect of our message across protests, policy events, corporate campaign moments, press engagements, and digital channels.

This is a role for a highly autonomous professional who can take responsibility for delivering communications workstreams while working within the organisation’s strategic direction and reporting structure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Campaign communications strategy
  • Co-develop and lead the communications strategy for European legislative and corporate campaigns, aligned with key political developments, policy opportunities, and organisational priorities.
  • Content creation
  • Produce high-quality content across formats including press releases, op-eds, social media copy, video scripts, policy briefs, speeches, talking points, and campaign toolkits in English and your native language.
  • Press and media relations
  • Build and manage relationships with European journalists, including the Brussels press corps and national media across EU markets. Pitch stories proactively, respond to media enquiries, and prepare spokespeople for interviews and campaign moments.
  • Digital and social strategy
  • Develop and execute digital campaigns that translate complex policy issues and campaign priorities into compelling public narratives. Lead social media communications around key advocacy moments.
  • Event communications
  • Lead communications for protests, public actions, policy events, campaign launches, and press conferences across European cities.
  • Stakeholder messaging
  • Craft targeted messaging for MEPs, European Commission officials, journalists, donors, corporate stakeholders, and the general public, adapting tone and framing for each audience without diluting the mission.
  • Cross-market coordination
  • Brief and align country-level communications teams, develop campaign toolkits, and ensure narrative consistency across different markets.
  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting
  • Track media coverage, campaign impact, and public sentiment. Produce regular reports with clear recommendations and actionable insights for senior leadership.
  • Represent Animal Equality’s mission
  • Support Animal Equality’s mission-driven work by producing high-quality output, embodying the organisation’s values and culture, and contributing positively to a collaborative international team.
  • Other duties
  • Perform any other duties reasonably assigned by your supervisor.

Person Specification

  • You are a strategic communicator with a genuine commitment to animal protection. You understand how a protest in Berlin, a press release in Brussels, and a social media post in Milan can all contribute to broader progress for animals.
  • You are as comfortable drafting sharp copy and handling journalists as you are presenting a communications strategy to senior leadership.
  • You thrive in fast-paced, multi-country environments and take pride in producing high-quality work under pressure. You are proactive, self-starting, and able to respond quickly to unfolding political and corporate developments.
  • You have strong writing skills in English and your native language and adapt tone and register with precision for different audiences.
  • You approach your work with a growth mindset: you actively seek feedback, learn from each campaign cycle, and continuously improve. Collaboration comes naturally to you, and you work effectively across international teams and time zones.
  • Above all, you are driven by the mission. You understand that every piece of content you produce, every press relationship you build, and every stakeholder you brief contributes to ending the suffering of billions of farmed animals.

Experience and Qualifications Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in communications, public relations, advocacy, or journalism
  • Ideally, experience in the NGO, political, public affairs, or EU institutional space
  • Proven track record of translating complex policy issues into compelling public narratives and media coverage
  • Excellent written and spoken English (C2 or native-equivalent)
  • Native or near-native proficiency in French (Italian is an advantage)
  • Experience working with European or international media
  • Familiarity with EU policy processes and institutions is a strong advantage
  • Experience in values-led campaigning is essential
  • Strong commitment to animal protection and alignment with Animal Equality’s mission
